Smokefree North West has teamed up with Barnardo's to highlight the 4000 chemicals in cigarette smoke and their effects on children.
The You Tube video Chemical Soup is part of the seven steps campaign, urging smokers to take step outside before smoking to protect children and young people from preventable illnesses caused by cigarette smoke. Many of the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke are invisible and can linger in the air.
At least 35,000 GP visits and hospital appointments across the north west could be prevented if smokers took seven steps outside to protect their children from the immediate and long-term harm from secondhand smoke. Smoking around children and young people in enclosed spaces exposes their developing lungs to terrible toxins and can trigger asthma attacks, bronchitis, middle ear infection and hearing impairment, as well as cot death.
