Patients will be able to start using the Waterside  Health and  Wellbeing  Centre from July.

Residents have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the centre, which will eventually cater for 6000 patients.

The new premises, which has cost £1.8m, will be home to a new GP practice.

Jalia Healthcare Limited will be providing services after successfully being awarded the contract following a procurement process.

Registered patients will have access to a range of GP services including medical checks, prescriptions, help for people long-term health conditions, childhood immunisations and family planning clinics.

The Waterside Surgery will be open six days a week, having extended opening hours until 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Saturday mornings until 12.30pm.

Christine Connell, chair of the Ivy Street Community Association, said: “I am delighted the Waterside  Health and  Wellbeing  Centre will be open shortly.  I know several people who are keen to become registered  at the GP practice already.  We look forward to working with the new GP practice as it will be an important part of the community.”

Sir Bill Taylor, chair of NHS Blackburn and Darwen Care Trust Plus, said: “We know residents have been eagerly awaiting the opening and I am really pleased to say it will be open by July.  It will be a fantastic facility for the people living in this much transformed area of the borough."

Councillor Maureen Bateson, a ward member for Ewood  where the Infirmary area is located , said: “I am really pleased the new GP practice will be open this summer in the health centre. It's great news for the area and another step in the  Infirmary's transformation.”

The centre , on Infirmary Street, held an open day in May for the community to visit the facility and meet representatives of Jalia Healthcare.

Dr Iain Chorlton,  who is a GP and a director of Jalia Healthcare Limited, said:  “I am delighted that this new practice is opening soon for the residents of the Infirmary. The surgery boasts brand new facilities and equipment with an experienced and caring team of professionals.  The full range of nurse and GP services is available, as well as convenient opening times to suit everyone. We are looking forward to working with the local community to develop a GP practice built around the needs of our patients.”

When the practice opens, patients will be able to book appointments over the phone, face to face at reception or via the practice website www.watersidesurgery.co.uk

NHS Blackburn with Darwen Care Trust Plus is also looking at other services  being provided from the health centre although there are no firm plans in place yet.

The opening of the centre was delayed because of uncertainty over funding but that has been resolved.
