The Summary Care Record project has been approved by the BMA with an assurance that patients can opt out of the scheme if they wish.
The new system aims to put all of the patient’s medical details into one place.
It is intended to help healthcare professionals obtain their details more quickly and aid safe treatment in an emergency.
The basic patient record includes information on allergies, medication and adverse reactions.
More details may be added over time and it will be accessible to healthcare workers anywhere in England.
An e-record will soon be made for every patient and packs about it are being sent out.
Patients who are uncomfortable with the proposal can opt out by contacting their GP practice and filling in a form.
They can also change their mind at a later date and choose not to have a summary care record.
GPs are encouraged to help get the message across that patients can choose whether they are included in the initiative.
As a result a selection of posters for display in surgeries have been posted at the link below.
