Medicines Coordinators based in GP practices across the borough were awarded their certificates after completing the Open College Network accredited course.
This was the first Medicine Management qualification of its kind in the country and is equivalent to NVQ level three.
The aim of the scheme was to promote robust medicines management through procedures to increase safety and reduce waste.
The scheme was also intended to enhance patient'sexperience and improve health outcomes for patients where medicines are involved.
The Medicines Coordinators scheme promoted and improved relationships with hospitals, community pharmacies, care homes, and other health professionals, all benefiting from having a dedicated practice contact.
The Medicines Coordinators were supported by Blackburn with Darwen’s Care Trust Plus’ medicines management team and their practices throughout the three year programme
A number of measures were developed to monitor quality and cost improvements. Quarterly reports and monthly training sessions enabled practices to benchmark their own performance and share best practice.
